UNFORTUNATE UPDATE:
Venmo deleted the WinMoMoney account on Dec 8, and we are therefore unable to continue this endeavor. No clear explanation was given.
We will stop trying to do cool and unique things and return to the monotony of life. Lawyers win.
Yes, this is Real. Real Big Money.
WinMoMoney is an innovative contest with a simple premise: send any amount of money to the Venmo account @WinMoMoney. On January 1st, the person who has contributed the most receives HALF OF ALL THE MONEY COLLECTED. No tricks, no luck, and everything is tracked transparently.
For example: if 1,000 people each donate $20, and then you donate $22, that’s $20,022 total. As the highest donor, YOU WIN half the pot, or $10,011! Now imagine what happens if 10,000 people donate… or 100,000.
Stop throwing money away on lotteries, where your fate is decided by bouncing balls or secret computer code. With WinMoMoney, your odds of cashing out are entirely in your own hands. The only risk is that someone else wants it more.
Frequently asked questions
Answers for the curious-minded and lawyers alike.
Is this gambling?
No. There is no element of chance. The result is determined entirely by participant actions. This is a voluntary social experiment with a prize, not a lottery, sweepstakes, or investment.
Is this legal?
This is a unique endeavor that doesn’t fit into classic categories with typical legal restrictions. This experiment does not involve chance, does not require a purchase, does not promise returns, does not function as an investment, and does not choose winners randomly.
When does the experiment end?
The billboard launches Dec 1. The contest closes on January 1st at 12:00 AM Central Time (CST). That’s the final cutoff. Any donations received after this time will not count towards the contest total. Be sure to plan your contributions and timing carefully. The winner is the highest cumulative donor as of that exact moment.
Can I donate more than once?
Yes! Every contribution you make to @WinMoMoney is cumulative. That means if you send $10 today and $15 tomorrow, your total contribution counts as $25 towards the contest. You can strategize however you like.
Is my contribution refundable?
No—contributions are final. This is not a purchase of goods/services. It’s participation in a public experiment.
Is this tax-deductible?
No. Not a charity. The winner is responsible for any applicable taxes on their rebate.
Can minors participate?
Must comply with Venmo’s age requirements (18+).
Is this project affiliated with or endorsed by Venmo?
No. This project is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Venmo or PayPal, Inc. Venmo is a registered trademark of its respective owner, and any reference to Venmo is solely for the purpose of explaining how participants may send funds. This experiment operates independently and has no official connection to the Venmo platform.
What If There’s a Tie?
In the case of a tie, the donation that was sent first is deemed the winner. Consider this when strategizing.
Can I pool together money with friends?
That’s an acceptable strategy (as long as you trust your friends). You can pool together your resources and send in an entry from a single Venmo account; that counts as one big donation.
How big could this get?
That’s the fun part. I have no idea. If it goes viral, it could get downright life-changing. The shape of the experiment is decided by the people who join it. And there’s also a chance that nobody plays at all and I wasted a ton of money on a billboard. Such is life.
Why should I trust you with my money?
Fair question. The truth is, you don’t have to. But here’s the deal: this project is a public social experiment. Everything—from total donations to the final winner—will be documented and shared openly. Unlike a lottery where you buy a ticket and never see where it goes, here you’ll be able to watch the experiment unfold in real time. This project doesn’t exist without the giveaway—it’s baked into the name, the rules, and the story. I WANT this venture to succeed. I WANT someone to get a lot of money.
Why are you doing this?
Because life is short and sometimes boring. Because I think it could be awesome. Because why not?
